April Showers

I missed Yoga this morning, because I decided to spend the morning with my mom eating pancakes and shopping for my new room! I had buckwheat pancakes, and they were delicious! I ate 2 pancakes and half a piece of bacon for breakfast. After we spent the day looking for different white pillows. I think I am going to have nightmares about pillows attacking me in my sleep. However we found some cute things, and after I have it figured out I will post.
There is a pet store at one of the malls we went to, and I had to go in. How cute is this baby? I wish I could have taken him home with me.
It's not warm out today but it's not freezing either. It started to rain a bit at the end, but it pushed me to get home because I didn't want to get wet. Maybe high 40s, but not sunny. I have to hurry and meet a friend in a little bit, but I managed to do a quick 5.5 mile run. I am so happy I went! I love when I debate to run or not to run, and I do run and love it! I walked a little bit of it in the beginning and end. I think I'm going to stop counting the walking, even though I said I would for marathon training because it doesn't give me a accurate pace. I need a new watch!!!!!! Also, I NEED TO DO MORE LONG RUNS!

I ran 5.5 miles in 54:03

I love the weekends!

It's a good day for MUFFINS!

I am still in my hungry sleepy phase :( I really don't know what is going on. I've been waking up about 30 minutes before my alarm clock the last two days as well. After work I went to the Chiropractor today, and expected to run when I got home. I caught up with a few e-mails, and thought about going out in the freezing cold. It was about 35 degrees, and although it was sunny I still felt cold. I ended up laying down for what I thought was going to be a few minutes, but it turned into a hour. I woke up just in time for Yoga and figured I would do that instead again today, since I know I can't go for the next two days. I'm glad I went to yoga, but I'm worried I'm not getting enough running in. I have a few weeks still until the marathon, but I really should be building up mileage and I don't feel as prepared or on track as I was for the half. It's supposed to start to get to the 40s, so I'm hoping the few degrees warmer will push me to get outside! I have no problem running when it's warm out, I really just hate being cold.

Yoga was the "fusion" class I tried a few weeks ago, and I really liked the instructor today. Yoga Shelter is located on top of Trader Joe's and the parking structure is free if you purchase something from Trader Joe's. I usually just run in and get a water, but today I decided to try something new! I got a Cliff Mojo Peanut Butter Pretzel Bar. It had 9 grams of protein, so I figured I would enjoy it after Yoga. I am a little confused when it comes to yoga and strength training, if it counts as strength of if only using weights does. Is protein necessary or recommended after yoga? I will have to look into that. I did know I would be hungry after yoga, since I've been pretty hungry after my workouts lately. It was tasty, I didn't love it and couldn't really taste the pretzel, but it was decent.

I was supposed to have a "Cooking Club" this week with my girlfriends. It's where about six of us get together once a month and choose a different "theme". Each girl then brings a different dish, appetizer, main dish, drink, side, dessert. Then we all come to cooking club with our recipe and food item, and eat the meal together, drink wine and chat! It's really fun, but this month was cancelled because everyones schedule got crazy. The theme was supposed to be breakfast food, and I already bought all my ingredients to make the muffins I was excited to try on my Hodgson Mill Oat Bran Box.  Today seemed like a good day to prepare these muffins, anyways! I only made 6 muffins instead of 12, because I didn't know how they would turn out and they were only for me. Also, this is the recipe on the box- but I added flax seeds and fresh blueberries. I am not a chef, and the blueberries made them a little mushy but I thought they still turned out DELICIOUS! I could actually eliminate the brown sugar, and have a VERY healthy muffin! I ate my first two hot out of the oven with a side of Almond Butter. Yum! I want to try different variations to these muffins, I think the oat bran and flax seed combination is a really good mix.

Here is the recipe: (taken from the back of my Hodgson Mill Oat Bran box)
Oat Bran Applesauce Muffins
1/2 cup Brown Sugar packed
1-1/2 cups Oat Bran Cereal
1-1/2 cups Flour
1-1/2 tsp. Baking Powder
1-1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs or 4 egg whites
1 cup applesauce, chilled
4 Tbsp. Vegetable Oil

Preheat oven to 400 F. Line 12 muffin cups with paper liners or grease muffin cups. Blend together dry ingredients. Add eggs, chilled applesauce and vegetable oil. Mix well until blended. Spoon batter into muffin cups. Let stand 10 minutes. Bake 15 minutes or until golden brown. Yield: 12 muffins.

This was the sunrise on my way to work today. I love when the sky is pretty during my drive! It's the start to a great day :)

Sanga Vinyasa and Exercise TV

Last night I attended my first Yoga session that was over one hour. It was called "Sanga Vinyasa" at Yoga Shelter in Grosse Pointe. This was very different than the yoga classes I have attended in the past, at one point rap was even playing!

The description is:

Sanga Vinyasa: Also referred to as Yoga Rocks, is a dynamic series of sequenced postures that seamlessly "flow" together. Sanga is a fancy Sanskrit work for 'Community'... Vinyasa is designed to build great internal heat in order to purify our systems. If you are looking for an eye opening, fun loving, high voltage, high energy yoga class, this is where you belong.

My review? It was fun. I almost didn't feel as much stretch as I usually do since we moved through the poses so quick, and we had a lot of time to do them on our own as well which I didn't like as much. I definitely built a sweat, I'm not sure if the heat is up more in the class, but I felt like it was a good workout regardless. I have only been doing yoga a handful of times and I can already feel a difference from my first class, I feel stronger- and more balanced in class and more capable of the poses. I like it!

I was pretty exhausted yesterday after a busy (and productive) day of writing follow up e-mails, unpacking, and cleaning up. I decided to lay low.

This morning I woke up, ate a small Chobani Blueberry Greek Yogurt  and did about 55 minutes of Exercise TV with my mom. We did four different "segments", two different abs (one with weights, one free standing), one total body conditioning with 8 lb weights, and one to tone your lower half. Every time I do a TV workout I always wonder why it is so hard for me to get started, I really enjoy them- and I love that I am using strength training in a fun way. Something I usually dread at the gym!

Now without my gym membership, I will definitely want to incorporate more TV workouts with my running and yoga to have a balanced workout. I think this will be the key to seeing results, ASAP!

I am headed to a sushi lunch with my mom at BluFin Sushi in Grosse Pointe. I really like the Blu Fin roll, and the tiny Kobe Beef slider is pretty great too ;) The service isn't the best, especially for being such a small place with only about 6 tables and a small sushi bar, but I definitely am a repeat customer.

I have to get ready, happy Saturday! It's only in the 40s... I think my goal this week will be to attempt a COLD run... I usually am NOT a fan of being cold whatsoever, so this will be a challenge. I'm up for it!

I'm missing Orlando and Disney already. Hopefully I will be back SOON ;) Here are a few pictures from Animal Kingdom with my brother!

Ready, set, 5k!

I think my brother and I were either drugged at lunch, or just extremely worn out from the last two days at the park. Either way, we got back from lunch and I told him I was going to lay down for 15 minutes, and woke up 2 hours later. When I went to scold him for letting me sleep that long he told me he just woke up as well! What happened to us!

Anyways, today was fun. We went to Fiddler's Green in Winter Park to pick up my race packet. #378! I want to wear a all green outfit, since tomorrow I think is a St. Patrick's day themed run, or at least from the pictures it looks like people will be in green! I'm not really sure. The shirts are long sleeve shirts, and I got a large to give to my dad. I am considering though, saving all of my t-shirts and making a blanket one day. I never really wear t-shirts like this, or long sleeves either. They aren't really comfortable to me!

This is my race outfit for tomorrow. The tank is more yellow, but it's a Cool Racerback from Lululemon, the skirt is the one I wore in my Princess race last weekend, a black run skirt from lululemon,  Luckily, I already had a green skinny satin pirouette from lululemon. The jacket is my sisters, and it's a green Define Jacket from a few years ago. I doubt I'll wear it during the race, but I'll keep it in my car for after! I hope I look just like a baby leprechaun.
After we picked up my race info, we headed to Park Avenue in Winter Park. There were two restaurants on my mind, Bosphorous, a Turkish restaurant where I sampled a few pieces of chicken the other day and was really interested considering I'm not sure if I have ever had Turkish cuisine. The other one, I also walked by, and also saw on a blog is called Briarpatch. It was adorable! We sat outside and the only thing on my mind lately has been BREAKFAST. I don't know why! Anything breakfast! So I ordered the Rasberry and Brie Cheese filled French Toast. I have never seen a combination like this, and it was amazing! The portion was HUGE, I got 3 large pieces of bread and was only able to finish one of them. I brought the rest home and had them for dinner with strawberries on top!
Tonight I really wanted to go to sleep early, however I don't know if that will happen since I just napped for two hours! We are going to go print our Universal tickets for Monday. We can't decide to get one park, just to see Harry Potter or get both park access and just make a full day of it. Decisions, decisions!

I received a e-mail from active.com that directed me to a article from shape.com. The content was:

"6 Rules for Running Faster"

1. Start Out Slowly

Ironically, the first key to running faster is to start slowly. In both training and racing, take your time to build toward your goal. In training, spend time building your aerobic fitness and strength before racing ahead to speedwork. At the races, include a warmup to activate your muscles and gradually build into your race speed. The gains you make from easing into both training and racing will help keep you injury-free, help your performance progress at a rate your body can handle, and allow you to reach a higher fitness peak.

2. Focus on Form

The time you invest in focusing on your form will pay off in free speed. Proper running form is both efficient and economical. Watch a video of the best runners and you'll notice very little wasted energy, as every movement serves to push them forward. Aim for relaxed arm carry, strong push off and faster cadence to make the most of your running form. Identify any weaknesses in your form, then address them with drills or strength exercises at least once a week.

3. Follow a Plan

Enlist the help of a coach, reputable book or training program. While many athletes are willing to do the work, often the work is inconsistent or improperly timed, which means inconsistent or slow results on race day. Avoid working too hard or too fast too soon. Remember, in training and fitness (and in comedy), timing is everything. A plan will help you reach your goal with the right balance of training so you arrive at your race fit and rested enough to peak.

4. Disconnect to Connect

Every once in awhile, disconnect from technology (pace, heart rate, measured courses) to connect with how running feels. Learn to read your body's cues about what running slow, moderate and hard feels like. Focus on your breathing, the sound of your feet and the conversations in your head. Learning to understand and then manage these will improve your ability to pace yourself and race up to your potential.

5. Redefine Your Comfort Zone

Breaking through to a personal best requires discomfort. Once a week, redefine your comfort zone by getting uncomfortable. Hill work, fartlek runs, speedwork, running with a group or taking your run a little farther are all ways to create challenge and change in your running. With proper challenge, you'll find improved fitness and strength that help you achieve your running goal.

6. Be Limitless

Rather than asking yourself "why," think in terms of "why not?" Even the best runners had to take a first step toward their dreams. Envision yourself at the end of the year, or even a few years: Where would you like to be with your running? Then, determine how you'll get there. Set smaller goals en route to your bigger goals. Reassess your progress after every race or year, then work at your weaknesses until they become strengths.

I will try a few of these. I always start out fast, so I wonder if I should start out slower. Also, I don't really follow any "form", I wonder if I did my wrists would hurt less. And finally, maybe I should try a few runs without a ipod, watch, etc. Just to run. Why not?

"Me" time.

Why does everyone think it is so weird I am here by myself right now? EVERYONE is asking me "Are you bored?" "your by yourself?" and is SHOCKED. This is exactly what I wanted! I love "me" time! I had a great day today, and it was all in the company of myself and Scampy the baby doggie I am watching. He seems a little down so I have tried to spend some more time with him, just petting him and talking to him (quite a bit). Everyone HAS to talk to their dogs, I have never had a puppy but I tell Scampy everything! Maybe my "me" time is getting to me...
Look at his cute bandana!
That was a confusing paragraph. Anyways- today was wonderful! I decided to make breakfast before my workout, since I knew I was only walking and not running. I made a whole wheat english muffin with almond butter, flax seeds and strawberries and blueberries on top. It was amazing!

I woke up and went on a 8 mile walk/ run. I only had "20" minutes on my chart, but I wanted to explore my area, and what better way to do it than on foot? I actually used my friends house as a marker and put that in the gps in my phone and made my way there. I took a picture of his house and texted it to him (he is at work) and he just replied "creepy, yes that is my house". I ran back home and logged it!

I walked/ ran 8.11 miles in 1:58:15.

I was quite hungry when I got back, and made a protein smoothie! I usually only drink the 2 scoops of my protein with water, but I added milk today and ice, a few strawberries, blueberries, flax seeds and a little bit of almond butter. It was yummy!
I spent another glorious sunny day at the pool. I haven't "laid out" in a long time. In Thailand I was very serious about my sunscreen since I knew how hot the sun is there. I really want a tan right now though! I still wore SPF and enjoyed being in the sun and having a day of doing NOTHING!

I have been trying to read the labels to watch my "sugar intake". I have a few family members who have been losing weight with the "belly fat cure" diet. Basically you get 15 grams of sugar a day, and something with carbohydrates. I am not seriously doing it right now because I am running, and need the carbs, but it is amazing to look at some of the sugar grams in things like a glass of orange juice! I am just trying to "cut back" my sugar and see what happens.

Also, I have decided to try a few days without meat. Yesterday was my first meatless day- and I am trying again today. I have toyed with the idea of being a vegetarian, I think this would be a great opportunity to try... A few days? A week? Again, I don't want to change my diet drastically right now since I am running my half marathon Sunday and possibly training for the San Diego full marathon in a few months, but these are just things I am considering.

What a wonderful morning!

YAY! I did my last 3 mile RACE PACE today before my big run. And I really pushed myself the last mile! I ran at 7.5 for two miles and 8.0 on the last one. I went to breakfast with my mom and dad this morning and has two pancakes with blueberry compote and coffee! The sweet breakfast must have helped me because I was full of energy, and excited because my dad I decided to go to Yoga immediately after my run.

I ran 3 miles in 24 minutes and 2 seconds with a race pace of 7'59! My last mile was ran in 7.03!

I can honestly say something I never thought possible. I think I'm in love with Yoga. I have always wanted to like it, but never really has. I thought Yoga was the new "trendy" thing, but never really understood it. I have taken three classes at Yoga Shelter and it's totally changed my view on yoga. The stretching was exactly what I needed after a quick 3 mile run and perfect to do before I have to sit on a flight!

For lunch I had my favorite new creation but I did 1/2 of each and added strawberries. I love it!
Last night I wanted to check if there was a lululemon in Orlando and to my surprise, there is a OUTLET! There are only 3 outlets in the world, and one of them is in Orlando. I definitely over packed, I have two suitcases to check in and a carry on and a purse. I tried to go through my suitcase and take out clothes, in hopes the outlet won't dissapoint. I am headed to the airport in a few minutes! I am hoping I get bumped to the later flight for a $400 voucher. Then I will immediately book my spring break to California! Either way, I'm excited to get there! Orlando here I come!

Last 5 miles until the half marathon!

I can't believe it! Today I had a 5 mile run, which is the furthest I am supposed to go until my half marathon in 8 days! It is beautiful outside today, the sun is shining and I would have loved to attempted my run outside except it is still a little wet and I didn't want to ruin my glass running slippers like the Disney e-mails call them. It was a relatively easy run, and I tried to push myself a little bit by changing the speeds on the treadmill from 6.5-8! I didn't do the entire run fast, just different intervals.

I ran 5 miles in 42:56, 8'34 pace

Right now I am drinking my Melaleuca  protein shake with a banana added to it. I added the banana today because we are going out to dinner tonight, which means I will eat later than I usually do. This morning for breakfast I mixed 1/4 cup of blueberries, fat free greek yogurt and flax plus cereal. It was really good! I surprised myself. It was very adventurous for me, I have to admit after following a number of health blogs lately I have been trying to be more creative with my meals.

I'm so happy it's Friday. My vacation officially begins! We are trying Rojo tonight in St. Clair Shores. It is a new Mexican Bistro that just opened near my house. The nice day+lakefront=margaritas?

REST Today, 12 miles tomorrow!

Today was BUSY! I worked from 7:15 AM-2:45 PM, then had to drive my parents to the airport- came home, made reservations to SKYDIVE in Orlando and ordered contacts, got ready and packed for a weekend at my sister's and boyfriends! I got to my sister's around 6:15 PM and we went directly to the Palace of Auburn Hills for the Detroit Piston's Game. It was a sold out game, just because of the fact they were playing Miami and Lebron James is on the team! He was explained to me as the "Michael Jordan" of our time, so that was cool to watch him. Even if I didn't "watch" it too much :) Aretha Franklin was at the game as well, and I could see her. It was fun. My sister's family had a suite at the game and there was dinner there. I had two great accomplishments- NO bread & butter and NO cookies! However I did have a margarita (well basically two since my sister didn't finish hers...)

Tomorrow is my 12 mile run. I found two tracks I am debating between. I am actually really excited. I am excited to try the GU Energy Gel and listen to my new playlist. Also, this will be the LONGEST run I have ever ran in my life... Until next weekend :)

I have been looking at a few health and running blogs which have inspired me to try a few "creative" breakfasts. The pictures on these blogs look so good. However, my pictures look like an small infant made my breakfast. It was actually good though! It was plain instant oatmeal with hot water, a small scoop of the organic peanut butter I posted, a little bit of whip cream, and blueberries on top!
My sister and brother in law got me the CUTEST little french macaroons for Valentine's Day. They are shaped as hearts and even have sparkles on them. I love them and ate 1.5 of them already, but I have 6 to share this Valentine's weekend or save for myself :)
These are from pinwheel bakery in Ferndale, Michigan.
How cute are these? It's almost midnight... Time to go to sleep, big run tomorrow...
